If you are constantly scraping and re-caulking your old drafty windows to keep out that chilly draft, it’s probably time you gave in and had them replaced. New windows will improve energy efficiency, reduce your monthly heating costs and boost your home’s curb appeal.

Whether you’re having your windows installed by Edmonton window companies or are going to attempt to DIY, there are some common mistakes homeowners make when replacing windows.

Choosing the cheapest option.

Just like any home improvement product, the cheapest option is not the best option and you always get what you pay for. Purchasing the least expensive windows on the market will cost you a lot more money in the long run. For example, cheap vinyl windows have a proven reputation for cracking in the cold. They can’t take the thermal expansion that comes with our changing temperatures, will come apart from the frame and need to be replaced.

Ignoring the ENERGY STAR label.

Cheap windows that do not meet standards for Winnipeg’s climate zone will not be ENERGY STAR certified and will not be an upgrade as far as energy efficiency is concerned. Don’t spend money on all-new windows that will not increase the thermal performance of your home. Always check for the ENERGY STAR label.

That means the windows have gone through a screening process and have passed the test for excellent energy efficiency. ENERY STAR windows are also rated according to your specific climate zone. Winnipeg is in Zone 2, but it’s always the best idea to get the windows rated for one zone colder than your own. That means ENERGY STAR windows rated for Zone 3 would be the most efficient.

Ignore the ratings for efficiency and it will be like throwing both energy and money out the window.

Hiring the wrong window contractor.

Just like purchasing the product, hiring the cheapest contractor is not always the best option. You should have your new windows installed by a reputable, licensed and insured window and door contractor - not the guy with the lowest bid.

Hiring a handy man or even a handy friend to do the job for you can lead to some problems.  If the window isn’t installed properly, it could allow moisture to leak into your home and cause expensive water damage. Then you’ll have to have it installed again. If the person installing your windows does not have proper business insurance, then it could make you as the homeowner liable for any damages or accidents that occur on the job site. Protect yourself and make sure you choose a contractor that can provide solid references, show proof of a business licence and insurance and who offers ENERGY STAR rated windows.
